Good Grief

On Monday, when Indians were busy in celebrating holi, it was apalling to hear about the violence created by some fractious fundamentalists of Karnataka over the publication of an article written by Taslima Nasreen.The article published in "kannada Prabha", a local newspaper was about burqa worn by muslim women.

It is shocking as to how a piece of paper can spark violence and aggression in a democratic and secular country like India.There can be no doubt that it is a game plan of obscurantist organisations to exploit such situations.This act done by fundamentalists questions our democracy and freedom.India, which is a country of different religions and different cultures, how can such condemnable acts be allowed?

But response of government was as bad as the violence created by people.In India, everyone has the right to express his or her views, and, those who try to suppress them should be punished. Strict actions should be taken by government to avoid such situations in future.

Young Indians should raise their voice against such acts,so that flares of extremism can be doused.

At the same time, free thinking writers must also avoid provocative words in their criticism.People writing should on such topics and, media publishing them, should be conscious about the consequences.

On the whole,everyone has the right to express his or her views unless it harms the sentiments of others and, those who try to suppress them, pose obstacles to the growth of society.
